Fire Fire?

Fire Fire?

A Chapter by Stephanie Jones

The school hadn’t changed much, just a few more pictures up, guessing by a few of them prom was around the corner and sports were trying to get more students.

“So, do you like it?” The girl asked, she must have been confused by my quietness.

“Mmhmm.” Not much of an answer but one good enough to make her not go into detail. We were breaching the room of my first class. Honors Geometry with Ms. Lirsa.

“Here you are.” She said with a smile walking through the open door.

“Thank you.” I followed after her, the classroom was calming. I’d never been in this class before, it was pretty, white like every other classroom and had posters up like most. But, there was a sense of welcoming as I walked through the door.

“Hello there Ms. Lirsa, I’ve got a new kid for you.” I poked my head around Mariell for a few seconds so she could see me.

“Oh well, I presume we do have a new student.” The teacher looked stunned by my beauty.  I stunned a lot of people I guessed. I finally looked around, after starting to lose the welcome feeling after that long shocked stare I noticed eight other people in the classroom. They were of course, staring at me.

I finally realized it was silent, and it was my turn to speak. “Hello, my name is Juliet.” I said smiling holding out my hand for a shake, she shook my hand.

“You know who I am I suppose,” she didn’t stop shaking my hand, she must have enjoyed the soft smoothness my hands provided.

“But of course.”

“How about you take a seat near the window.” She pointed to the other side of the room, and I walked that way.

“Here?” I stood off to the side of a desk.

“Yes, that one, perfect.” I sat down. Finally looking over to see the people staring at me. When I looked up they turned their heads fast, embarrassed from staring, I grinned politely before looking down again.

The bell rang five minutes later and about ten kids jumped into their seats five seconds before it rang. The teacher introduced me, and asked me to stand and tell everyone about myself. Even she sounded interested.

“Well, my name is Juliet Sapphire, and I traveled a lot when I was younger with my parents…” Just keep making it up I supposed. “I was home schooled because of this, and this is my first time in a school. My parents died two years ago, there was a fire on the plane we were coming back to America on, and when the plane crashed, everyone but four people died. I was one of the unlucky four, I’d guess you’d say unlucky because we were the ones who had to deal afterwards. I was living with an Aunt in Connecticut, before she got tired of me, and kicked me out. With the money I had I bought a house out here in Selma, and I have been living there about a week.”

People really listened to me, their attention was well focused on me, and I was afraid some of them just wanted the opportunity to stare at me.

I started to head back to my seat, “Juliet,” my teacher called, and I turned around, smiling lightly, “here is your book, we are starting chapter nine, ask if you need help.”

“Will do.” I stated before turning around and heading back to my seat.

Ten minutes later the door to the classroom opened, and a boy walked in. I didn’t see his face, he was turned around.

“Late again Matt.” Ms. Lirsa said. Matt? Then he turned around, Matt.

“Sorry, I was looking for someone.”

“Just go to your seat and start on the worksheet at your desk.” The only desk left open was the one next to me.

He came in and sat down into the seat slouching first, and looking up at the ceiling, either really disappointed, or tired. Then he turned to look at me.

“Juliet?” He said and I smile appeared on his face.

I smiled too, “Hello.”

“What are you doing in this class?”

“I’m a tenth grader most of us take this class.”

“Oh.” He stated.

“What are you doing in here?” I said tiling my head.

“I took algebra 2 as a sophomore so now I am stuck taking geometry as a Junior.”

“You are a junior?” I thought he was a senior.

“Yeah.” He stated, smiling.

“Matt, stop bothering the new student so she can do her work.” Me and Matt smiled trying to hold back a laugh.

“Sorry Ms. Lirsa.” Matt said trying to sound sympathetic through his silent giggles.

“That’s okay.” She stated before writing something on the board.

I wrote on a paper to Matt, ’Yeah, stop distracting me.’ Before flicking it off my desk onto his with a soft blow. He smiled and looked at me, and I turned my head to look out the window, and I felt as if I was looking at him that he shook his head smiling, before starting to do his work.

The work was very easy, I did all the problems in a matter of seconds, seeing that I used speed to get it done quick. I still had another twenty minutes stuck in the class. And I was afraid of looking over at Matt again, I felt bad getting him in trouble.

Then I looked at the window, and noticed it was open a speck, and on the window sill there was a little plant, or at least a pot of soil. And then I felt pain, and I couldn’t figure out why. I felt hurt, little, weak, and dying. I looked back at the plant. The others once said that was my power, growing things, maybe I felt their feeling too. I grabbed the pot off the window sill and placed it on my desk.

I felt the pain even more now, and knew why. The soil was dry, the seed waterless. Ms. Lirsa must have given up on the plant. Then I looked up to notice Ms. Lirsa standing in front of my desk.

“Is there a problem here?” She stated.

“Oh, no, I just really like plants.”

“Plants, sorry sweetie that plants dead, never had life.”

“Well, can I have it then, I’m really good with plants.”

“Sure, not like I was using it.” She stated, before looking down at my work. “Impressive, how did you know all this?”

“I have already done this lesson.” She smiled at my answer before turning around and heading back to her desk.

I looked back down at the little plant, and still felt its pain, but couldn’t help it till after school. I would keep this plant, and keep it safe, for my eternity. Then, in easier words, my thoughts got disrupted by a huge ka-boom sound, and the start of gray smoke, before hearing the smoke alarms go off.

“Fire students, please exit the building in a calm proper fashion, someone help Juliet get out.” She stated before literally darting out of the classroom screaming. Way to stay calm I thought.

“Juliet, come on.” Matt said before holding out his hand.

I took it slowly, I wasn’t really worried about the fire, I could get out of this building in a seconds notice if it was necessary, I also grabbed my little plant. Nothing would hurt it, as promised.

Me and Matt were the last people out of the class, and we shut the door on the way out. I noticed the smoke getting darker, and unlike the small and light grey it was before it was rather black. Matt started coughing, and I would have to if I had to breath. The hallways were empty, obviously everyone was out. We headed down the hallway until we actually saw fire. This was getting too dangerous, the smoke was black now, in a matter of seconds, and Matt and I were near the fire. I knew Matt couldn’t see. I could, because well I am immortal and I guess it is a specialty amongst everything else.

“Juliet, I can’t see.” I was right.

“Matt, calm down.” With that I took my over shirt and threw it at his face, and he took the opportunity as I wanted him to, to cover his face. I then lifted him, and I think he was a little scared, and held onto my plant. “Matt, close your eyes.” I stated.

“What?”

“Close your eyes.” That time I shouted and he heard, he also closed his eyes as I had told him to.

With that I darted towards the main entrance. I stopped a few feet from the door, placing him down and having him open his eyes, he took my hand once more, and I believe it was because he still couldn’t see. I led him towards the front door, and pushed him out first, more so that he looked like a hero.

When we got out immediately we were surrounded by firemen, who grabbed him and me and ran us away from the building. I played along, they checked him, and he was okay. When it came time for them to check me, I suggested that I felt fine and didn’t need help. They still wanted to check but I politely refused. It wouldn’t go well if they tried to find a pulse.

I looked over at Matt, and he was staring at me. He would probably be asking later on how I did it, saved us, but that was then, and this was now. I smiled at him, and he smiled back. He looked adorable with his midnight blue eyes, and the blanket they covered him over with. We were sitting on the back part of an open ambulance, set up just for me and him. Two lucky survivors.

I laughed just them, with a simple thought in mind.

“What?” He asked.

“What a great first day.” I smiled, he laughed.

“Yeah, it was, wasn’t it.” Then it went silent, he looked down, then looked back at me. He lost his smile. “How’d you do it Jewels?”

“I’ll explain it later.” With that he went back to looking down. I jumped off the ambulance, I felt like standing, I placed my arms back on the ambulance. I finally looked around. The buses picked up just about all the students except the few that lingered. A policeman and  the fire chief were trying to explain to the news lady just what happened.

“Ma’am, in simple words the chemistry lad had an accident, too many mixes of one substance. It is all fixed now though. The fire is down, and done. We are mostly trying to air out the smoke. The building hardly harmed.” The fire chief stated.

“Well, was any of the student body harmed, isn’t that the bigger question.”

“Only two kids were even close to being hurt, but both are fine.” The police officer said.

“Two kids, students, how seriously injured?” The news lady was really trying to make a good story out of this.

“They weren’t injured, they were just in the smoke for a few minutes more then everyone else.”

“Have these children been sent to hospital?” She asked, I thought it was a dumb question.

“No they haven’t.” The fire chief said.

“Why not? They could be hurt.”

“They were checked here and everything was in order, no need to send students to the hospital if they are okay.” The fire chief stated.

“They are over there,” he pointed towards us, ”trying to relax mostly, we will get the story later out of them.” I’m sure he will get a story, not.

“I am just going to go ask them a few questions.” She stated starting to head in our direction.

“They are trying to relax ma’am.” The police officer said.

I butted out of their story, I was tired of it. I moaned, and it was pretty loud.

“What?” Matt said, looking back at me.

“News lady.” I said, he turned his head and moaned sort of like mine. It made me laugh.

“So, what is the story?” He said.

“The story?” I said.

“Well, she is obviously going to ask us about it, so just tell me.”

“Fine, the story is, we were trying to get out like everyone else, through a door. We were the last ones out, and we shut the door. I went the wrong way, seeing as I’m new and didn’t know the place well. You came after me, we landed dead center at the point of fire surrounded by flames galore. It was dark, and the smoke black. We could hardly see, and we led ourselves out holding onto each other, and holding onto the lockers. We knew to cover our mouths to prevent smoke inhalation, that’s why there were no lung issues.” He cut me off.

“Lung issues?” He said. Oops, he didn’t hear that. Think, think.

“We were in pitch black smoke, of course there would be problems.”

“Oh, of course, genius, go on.” He stated smiling.

“We were finally in the main hall, we could somewhat see better, we ran towards the door, and were pulled out by a few firemen.” I smiled, “That’s the story.”

“Now, you are going to tell me the real story.” He said.

“You won’t like the real one.”
“Try me.” He said.

“Okay, well Matt, you were on the point of freaking out so I picked you up and ran through the halls out of memory and stopped at the main door letting you down, taking your hand and leading you to the front door, that is the real story.” I said.

He looked a little disappointed then stated, “I like the fake one more.” He smiled I laughed.

“Fake one it is.” I said.

Within the next ten minutes we explained everything that happened. We were let go, and he asked me if I wanted a ride home. I needed fresh air so decided to walk.

I took the long way home, or at least home to the motel. I thought of how perfect this day had been, or completely imperfectly perfect it was. I’d not only met Matt, but made him like a best friend. We got along perfectly, as I knew we would. Juliet and Matt, the two immortals. I smiled at that. I’d also reached my door. I walked in and went to the bathroom. I reached my hand into my pocket and pulled out my pot. The poor little plant. I put some water in the pot, and I felt the pain ease up. I decided to try growing it. I walked it into the room and placed it on the dresser.

I snapped my fingers at it, then realized I looked dumb. I brushed my hand slightly over the soil, so the soil would be even. When I looked at it, I actually had to blink. A little green thing poked it’s head out at me. I took my hand and once more swept my hand over the plant, but didn’t touch the soil. It worked, the little green plant got bigger and needed more water. I gave it a little more and gave it a rest. I didn’t want it growing out of its pot. I went and laid down I looked over at the clock, it read 9:12. Where had the time gone? I relaxed and closed my eyes. I was given nine hours to think. I’d use them well, and then I’d go to school tomorrow. Which would kind of be today, since I’d never sleep, and you can’t start something anew without a break.

I closed my eyes tight, then relaxed them. I did this periodically.

I opened my eyes, “good morning Juliet.” I said before sitting up.
