Birthday.

Birthday.

A Chapter by Stephanie Jones

It was 8:10 in the morning, and it was still a clam morning. I had spent the entire night counting the hours and what would happen tomorrow which is now today. Thursdays, fun. I turned on the television, and I was surprised. I was unsuprised by the fact that school was canceled for the day, I was surprised because they hadn’t found a new place to hold all of us kids.

I began to change my clothes for the new day. I could feel the warmth reflecting off the window. I put on a blue faded tank top with a pair of jeaned shorts and sat back down to hear the rest of the story.

“There still hasn’t been word on what the town will do next. But for now, I am Tonya Tikler and this has been the word of the day.” I enjoyed when that news lady said her last name. The ‘L’ was silent so when she stated her name it sounds like Tonya Tiger. Just with a ‘K’.

I turned off the t.v. and looked out my window. It was such a pretty day out. I shouldn’t remain locked inside all day. I stood up, grabbed my little plant and walked out the door.

There were a few teenagers standing around a car. Probably older than me, but only by a few years. From the sound of their voices, they were taking advantage of the free day to crash a motel room. Five guys, and four girls, that’s a party, I wouldn’t want to join.

I walked down the steps slowly, and immediately I was noticed. Could it have been the fact I was of extreme beauty, a creature never seen that can withstand such power, they didn’t even know much of. Probably not, but I didn’t want to find out either. When I reached the bottom step, I’d finally taken my eyes away from the people long enough to see a car on the parking spot belonging to me. But…I didn’t own a car. And our side was cleared besides those teens.

The car said it was a Honda Civic Si Concept. It was silver and grey with a black cover on top. And, it was fast. There was a note on the seat, and I opened up the door, because I just knew this had to be mine. The note read:

                        Hello Beautiful.

Well, I am writing to you today on account of that your little sister reminded me that today is your birthday, and I bought you a car. Happy Sweet Sixteen. Well, at least, you know what I mean. Your sister is doing great, and we got her into the finest school down here, with her big brain. She says she loves you, and we all miss you, hope your having fun.

                        Tyler, and the clan.

Gosh, had I forgotten my own birthday? I guess, it just didn’t matter, because I’d never have another one, just fifteen forever. Didn’t matter much to me though, I’d gotten a car. I stepped in and shut the door behind me, then locked it. I didn’t like the looks those kids were giving me. How did Tyler know where I was?

I grabbed the keys, they were in the cup holder, started the ignition, and drove out, fast. The car didn’t shake or anything, everything perfect. I was at a stop light. I turned on the music, there was a cd inside, and I decided to play the first song.

7 things by Miley Cyrus. Oh how much he enjoyed tormenting me with the loss of relationship between us. At least the song would end happily like our relationship, I hoped.

I rolled down my windows, the light turned green, and I turned the corner. It was a nice day after all.

Could immortals get tan, I thought, turning another corner before making a clear straight in my car to the beach.

When I arrived at the beach, I noticed it was pretty packed. Numerous teenagers were down here along with me, and the parking lot was pretty full. I saw a car pulling out and grabbed the spot before any other car could. I opened the door and stepped out enjoy the soft breeze and the warmth of the sun on my skin.

I headed towards the beach, before stopping at a stop light with five other walkers waiting to cross. We crossed after a few seconds, and then we made our way as a pack onto the beach. But not very long after was I alone again. I went to the farthest side of the beach, before sitting down on the soft, warm sand. Memories were flashing through my mind, and replaying over and over again. Of the night I was almost raped. One of the first nights I left, and was on the beach with Lexi. That was when I was weak, I am stronger now.

“Juliet?” Someone shouted and I turned my head before smiling. Matt. I waved, and he followed before starting to make his way towards me.

“Hey, how are you?” Matt said finally reaching me.

“Good, you?”

“Good, good. Why are you over here?”

“I don’t know, I have nowhere else to really go, you know?” I said, before looking towards the rocks.

“Well, you can come sit with me over there.” He reached out his hand. I looked over at him then his hand before taking it and standing up.

We begun heading towards where as I noticed about thirty other people were. I looked at Matt, and he was looking down at the sand.

“You sure have a lot of friends.” I said. He looked over at his group then at me and smiled.

“Yeah, I guess I do.”

“Yeah, you guess?” I stated.

“How do you know if they always are really your friends, and they aren’t just near you, because you have money.” He looked back down again.

“You have money? Oh that changes everything between us.” I smiled, and when he looked up at me he looked worried then smiled.

“You got me.” He said.

“I know.” I said before smiling again.

“You have really pretty eyes, you know that?” He said. I did?

“My eyes? Have you ever seen your own?” I choked out a laugh.

“Yeah, I see them all the time, but your eyes, are unique. You know?” Oh, yes, I did know. The fact I was immortal and being just about perfect in every way came along with the thought.

“My mom used to say that all the time to me.” By then we reached his friends, and he sat down on a sprawled out blanket.

“Are you going to stand there all day?” he said smiling, and I sat down next to him.

We kept mostly simple talk with his friends. As the day progressed, it got a little boring too. But, I did have to say, I accomplished my main idea, being with Matt.

Just then a piece of paper got flown into Matts midst, and landed on his bare chest.

“What is that?” I said before turning around fast to look at the person who threw it. All I saw was a person vanishing in the distance.

“Well Juliet, why didn’t you tell us it was your birthday?” He said. I looked back over at the group to see them all smiling.

“What?” I said, before remembering. “Oh, oh yeah, my birthday, I guess it didn’t matter, you know? I got a car for it.” I said that rather quickly. “Uhm, hey, I’ll be right back, I have to go see something.” I said before standing up and walking quickly towards the entrance, out the gates, across the road, and after the disappearing body.

“What do you want Tyler?” I stated. I knew it was him by the way the persons hair looked.

Just then he dropped out of a tree. “What no big hello or anything.” I smiled.

“Hi Tyler, how are you?” I said.

“I’m good, came to see you.”

“Obviously.” I said rolling my eyes.

“That is so human of you.” He stated, grinning wide, and I knew he was joking but it still kind of hurt. “Sheena come down here.” Tyler said before Sheena dropped out of the tree with a child in her arms.

“Lexi.” I gasped. With or without a heart I could hardly breath. I took her from Sheenas hands and placed her in my own. With that she woke up and I saw her pretty little eyes.

“Juliet?” She just pronounced my name full on. I smiled, and she reflected my own.

“Hi, Lexi, how are you?” I said.

“Good, you?” She sounded so adult like.

“I’m good.” I smiled. I looked over at Tyler and he was frowning. “What’s wrong?” I stated.

“Nothing, we just have to go soon. It is a long trip home.”

“Oh.” I said looking back down at Lexi. I gave Lexi a good long hug and whispered, “I love you Lexi” in her ear before handing her back over to Sheena.

I then hugged Tyler. “What this for?” He stated.

“Thank you, Tyler. That’s what for.” I said before backing out of the hug and looking him in the eyes.

“Well, I guess we should be going. You have humans to go back to.” He smiled, I rolled my eyes once more.

“Yes, I do. And you have the town of raging hormonal immortals and vampires and such to get back to.”
“Fair enough,” he said. We both smiled.

“Bye.” I said, and they begun backing away.

“Wait, Juliet?” Tyler said.

“Yeah?” I said.

“Did you like the song?” I knew he’d bring that up eventually.

“Yes, in fact I did, very much. Thanks for the car too.” I said smiling.

“Well, bye.” Tyler said. I nodded my head, and stood there watching as they walked away, hit the dead end of the road, before Tyler looked back smiled and waved. I waved back. And off they went into the forest on their way back home.

I begun heading back to the beach, down the street, across the road, through the gates, down a few feet before sitting back down on the blanket next to Matt.

“What happened?” He said smiling, looking at me.

“Oh, nothing, I just saw an old friend.” Old indeed.

“Really.”

“Yeah.” I said smiling to myself.

“How did that go over.” He whispered, since apparently he didn’t want his friends to know.

“Really well, it was the best birthday gift someone could have given me.”

“What did they give you?” Of course he’d ask that.

“Nothing.” He made a confused look on his face. “They just brought back an old memory, I hadn’t been thinking about in a while, that I missed.”

“Well then that’s good.” He said.

“Yeah, it was.” I said. And I decided to take my chance now or never with him. Slowly, I leaned back, and into his arms, and relaxed. He didn’t move me, or nudge me, or anything. As if, he had wanted me to do this all along.

And, as if he had heard my thoughts, he kissed my hair. I smiled calmy, and I knew, if I had, had a pulse. My heart would have just stopped beating.
