A Chapter by Stephanie Jones

Not long after, it was dark. They had the fire pit set up and everyone was gathering around the fire. Matt and I stayed on the blanket. I looked up at him, and he looked back at me, he headed in for a kiss, the one thing I’d only dreamt about.

I came in too, and our noses touched gently before parting slightly. I must have been two centimeters away from his lips when I snapped back from reality.

If I kissed him, he’d become me. And, I didn’t want him to be me yet. I liked him for all his imperfections. I backed myself away from him, and went back to laying on his chest. At first, I was worried he wouldn’t put his arm around me, too upset with the denial. But as that thought crossed my mind I felt his arm shift and moving his other arm to actually pick me up. He wrapped me into a ball in his arms, and held me there. I wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged tight.

“Do you want to get out of here?” He whispered softly into my ear. I simply nodded my head and he stood up, still holding me. “See you guys.” He stated, and I heard some byes, and the rest were probably head nods.

“You do know I can walk?” I looked away from him, somewhat at the ground.

“Well, yeah…but I kind of like you in my arms.” If I had a heart, or at least a pulse, I’d have blushed. “Jeez, you are so light.” Another compliment, did he want my heart of stone to somehow beat?

“I’m not that light, I’m perfectly average.” I looked at him, his eyes shot glasces at my legs all the way up to my eyes.

“No way. Average can’t describe you. You are just too,-“ He stopped himself. Was he changing his mind. I started to worry, and it showed on my face, he looked at me… “It isn’t that, it is just, words can’t describe you. Beautiful doesn’t begin it.”

Beautiful doesn’t describe you either… I said in my head, I wouldn’t dare tell him though..I decided to change the subject.

“I do like walking you know?” And with that he let me down, but he took my hand. “Where are we going?” I stated, now confused by our course.

“I don’t know.” The way he said it made my heart of stone melt. I knew he was going to keep going. “Anywhere is fine, the world can’t get any more magical then of how I feel with you.”

“Oh, yeah it could.” Uh-oh. The words entirely slipped. I didn’t mean a single bit of it. I didn’t want him to know a single word about my world.

“How is that?” I knew he’d question it, any human would.

“It doesn’t matter.” I stated, calm.

“I want to know.” He said.

“Fine. I think there might be something more than us, humans.” Once again I kept the secret of my immortality hidden.

“You think?” He said. By then we stopped walking, he wanted to know the truth.

“Well, yeah. I mean, how do you explain half the things that occur in our lives.”

“But you don’t know?” He sounded really curious as to whether I did or didn’t know. Did he know?

“Well…” I wanted to tell the truth, but I could easily lie. That was a skill of ours, lying.

“Well, what?” He yelled at me. Some people turned to look at us then turned around. They probably suppose another teenage couple meltdown.

“Well, I don’t know. But, one time, I found my cat at my old house dead, with two bite marks. In his neck.” Lie, just keep lying. And, I knew he still clearly had no idea if I was being truthful or not. But I wanted to know what he knew.

“Hmm, where was this? Where you used to live?” He did know.

“Uhmm, right around here actually, about two towns down or so, why?”

“My clan? But, we don’t bite around here. Unless someone else, but that is asbsurd, we don’t let people through. Unless by chance.--”His whispering words caught my ear. Seeing as I was a very good listener, though he spoke with such a tone a “human” wouldn’t have heard. Just keep with it Jewels.

“Your clan?” I stated, and kind of loud.

“Shhh, uhm, we have to get out of this place. Come, get on my back.” And with that I did so. “Oh, and can you close your eyes too.” With that, I shut them. I had no clue what I had in store.

“You can open your eyes now.” And I did, and I also had no idea where I was.

“Where am I?” Typical human phrase.

“My house.” Which, was on the complete other side of town. I looked out in the road and saw all the cars driving by with their lights on, it must have been around 9 p.m., he lived on a main road. I looked back at him.

“How did we get here?” Another lame human excuse. I knew. I knew well. The sad fact is, is that I couldn’t describe my very feelings. Stupidity, hate, and the fact I’m lying. I want to get what he is out of my head. It is killing me. Rotting my insides. Without a second chance the words slip from my lips. “Vampire.” I didn’t have a second chance to speak, he grabbed me at that moment, and within seconds I was inside his house being flung on his bed.

“How do you know?” He said in all calm tone, checking to see if I am okay. Of course I was, but a human wouldn’t have been.

“How? What? Impossible.” That was all I could slip through my lips.
