Special.A Chapter by Stephanie JonesWhen I turned my head the guardian was looking at me, smiling. The man was old. Besides that he was probably over centuries old, he was old, as if when he turned he was 80. Creepy. I’d hate changing at such an age. I thought I should say something, anything. End our silence. “So what is his name?” I blurted out. “Joseph.” He stated. “No last name?” I said, still smiling. “We don’t give out last names.” He said. “Oh,” I whispered, looking away. “Is he like me?” I said, still looking away towards the humans on the other side of the plane. “Yes-well, no. No one technically is like you. You are sort of a special kind of special.” I turned to look at him, I looked him dead in the eye trying to figure out what he meant, but I received no answer from them. “What do you mean?” I said. “You are, ‘one of a kind’?” He said, raising his eyebrows on the last words. He made what I am into a question? “One of a kind?” I said. “Like, even more than a special.” He simply nodded his head at my words. “So, am I in my own class, or what?” I started questioning me, even more than ever. “We don’t have a class for you, technically, so we keep you with the specials because they are mostly you.” He said, looking out the window. “Wait, what?-“ My words got cut short. “Attention, we will be landing soon. Please buckle your seatbelts.” Came over the speakers. I was already buckled in. The plane started heading down. “No worries Juliet. We have someone like you to explain things to you, but until we get home, you will just have to forget for now.” The plane was having a little trouble with the landing, and some babies in the second class were screaming. Their ears were probably popping like crazy. I remember those days. Now I have nothing to pop. But he was right. I’ll drop it till we get to Iwo Jima, but than I will ask questions full force. I need to know the truth. ----- I listened as the plane came to a slow halt, then nothing. I heard people rustling in second class to grab their bags, and some of the humans in our first class moving. But none of my guards were. I didn’t even have to turn my head, I already knew the guards movements. They were quieter than the humans but still very easy to hear. But right now, I heard nothing. So, I was going to take a long shot that I had to make the first move. Gradually I stood up, and I felt the guards bodies shift and rise along with mine. In the back of my mind someone was screaming, “I GOT THE POWER.” And it made me giggle. A couple people took a quick glance and rolled their eyes. As we got of the plane we walked over towards the black cars off to the side. Me and the guardian in one van everyone else stepping into the surrounding eight cars.
