Daffodil

There is a small park near where I live and every year I know winter is over when the daffodils start to surface...

I watched as your green leaves began their journey

To reach above the earth

And waited with growing excitement

As you broke ground suddenly, unexpected but welcome

 

I drank in your beauty and charm

As you unwrapped yourself

And in a moment majestically

Encircled with deep yellow gold your trumpet like head

 

We danced together on a velvet lawn

As you glided into the wind

I marvelled at your progress as it continued on

Heralding the end of the vice-like darkness of winter morn

 

Yet so soon we parted your time so short

You retreated to the ground from whence you came

And I left alone, missed your splendour

Not equalled by those who followed in your wake
