Drifting Away

Drifting Away

A Poem by Tarry Franck

I feel like I'm dying inside
My love for life
Is drifting away
And I'm finding it difficult to stay,
I'm mentally struggling
The blood flows freely
By my own hand
What do I do
How do I make a stand,
How do I stop the struggle
From consuming my judgment
My sound mind
To keep myself above ground
Free of life's crime.

Beautifully honest write. I have felt this way, I think many have. The feeling that a part of you is dying and you don't know whether to curl up in a ball or scream. Times like these, I go down to the beach at night and walk the shores; sometimes I even scream into the ocean. It's a good stress relief. It will get better, though. Well written piece, I really enjoyed it.

The dark ruins of ones own life are the most fertile ground for the poet. Keep digging, your harvest is rich.

Tarry,

Fantastic conceptual write. The people taken prisoner during Hitler's 'Final Solution' in Germany surely experienced this 'Drifting Away' concept you have so brilliantly portrayed in your poem. I believe they kept themselves above ground by focusing on one positive thought/hope each day. Consider that they were stripped of everything: (family) including spouses, children, parents, siblings; (clothing) including every garment; (hair) cleanly shaven; (possessions) everything you ever had was taken; (food) you were to work until you died; (water) no water to drink or for bathing; (social life) no socializing allowed; (health care) wasn't required - you were there to die; (religion) not allowed; (criminal justice) you were considered less than human, an enemy of the state, you weren't entitled to justice; (suicide) no way out on your own, you would be shot, beaten to death, gassed, but you had no right to take your own life because it wasn't yours to take; (shelter) unnecessary winter or summer. Otherwise I believe they would have succumbed because the Nazi Camp Guards sought out such persons to prove that they were inferior humans and deserved to die. We are so blessed to have the privilege of life, food, water, justice, shelter, friends, family, opportunity, love, hope, God and yes, we can take our own life. But why die when there's so much to live for. Compare our lives to those of the Jews, Gypsies, Mentally or physically handicapped, Homosexuals, and others the Nazi's considered undesirable and we have it made in this life. Everyday is an excuse to wake up in the morning and be happy just to be alive; to be allowed to live. Is there any of this data that you might incorporate into your poem as an alternative to suicide? Thanks for sharing this well thought out and written poem. Frightening to consider when there's so much to live for.
