Nightmare 1

Nightmare 1

A Story by Tarun Ravioli

You are tasked with killing a monster. Its true name is unknown to you. Perhaps its name was lost to the annals of history, or perhaps it never had one. It threatens everything and everyone you know. You are tasked with a herculean undertaking.
Some look up to you as a savior, a hero. Others view you as a fraud. They know you don’t really have what it takes to kill it. You’ve ridden on the coattails of others throughout the hard parts. They know that you’ve never put in any significant time or effort into understanding this monster. How could they possibly expect you to save the world?
The ones who created the monster urge you to come kill it. They offer rewards, gifts for your undertaking of the challenge. The stakes aren’t as high for anyone as they are for you. Your team is waiting on you. Do you plunge forth into the great unknown? Or do you falter, in the time of greatest need.
I am not a hero. I wasn’t destined for greatness. I am not the cream of the crop. I am the chaff. I should have been weeded out, tossed to the side to be used as fuel for the living.
You are tasked with killing a monster. It lumbers through forests, causing tremors with each step. It casts a hushed silence upon the land. Birds stop singing, insects pause in their incessant chirping. The forest tells you to run.
You are tasked with killing a monster that rises through the clouds, drains the masses dry, and funnels those nutrients to its head. It feasts without remorse, ceaselessly, and will continue to do so until the blood of our soil runs dry.
You are no hero. There is no prophecy. There are no restarts, second-chances, or 1-ups. You only get one life in this game. The skills you can acquire are limited, by time and money and energy and status. You are running out of precious time with each passing second. You have to make a decision. What will you do?
