The Death of Freddie Gray

The Death of Freddie Gray

A Poem by Bob B

Baltimore's recovering from riots by frustrated

Citizens who entered the fray.

What--this time--caused the unrest?

The death of Freddie Gray.

We hear that while he was in police custody--

Is someone suggesting foul play?--

Mysterious circumstances brought about

The death of Freddie Gray.

Witnesses attest that after mistreatment

The victim did, by the way,

Request medical attention. Very strange:

The death of Freddie Gray?

Did being transported without any seat belts--

Tell me: yea or nay--

Injure the larynx and spinal cord occasioning

The death of Freddie Gray?

When asked about Gray, the father said,

"He's dead. What more can I say?"--

Expressing sad loss and helpless frustration

At the death of Freddie Gray.

Violence breeds violence; we all know that.

Brutality should never hold sway.

What can be done to prevent more deaths

Such as that of Freddie Gray?

Soul-searching could provide solutions

And maybe keep at bay

Circumstances such as those that caused

The death of Freddie Gray.

This is a lovely ballad about a tragic loss and harsh consequences for the community. I grew up in Baltimore so I have a very soft spot for that lovely city. My prayer is that there will be much soul searching and that justice and respect as well as economic improvement for the poor will ensue. Thank you for your witness.
