My Mourning Star

A mourning sonnet.

You left to soar upon that starlit plane

beyond the Earth where angels hold you near.
Oh, mourning star, within these drops of rain
you see me through the loneliness of fear.

The mist of morning bleeds as sunlight breaks--
a cat-claw longing pulls the night apart;
I’ll wade with you in clear blue mountain lakes
when willows weep and tear-duct moments start.

With each new day you flare the morning sky;
come close to me as planet Earth spins on.
I’ll lesson fear and laugh as teardrops dry
when I behold your face within the dawn.

    Before the heart beats rhythms into flight,
    you rise like Venus in the pre-dawn light.
