Something in the Night Beckons Me

Something in the Night Beckons Me

A Poem by J. Land
"

My song to the stars and their mistress..

"

Something in the Night beckons me
To edge my way down its streets
Without a flashlight, or reflective clothing
I cannot hide in the day, so I hide in the Night

I am neither dangerous nor frightened
Only curious to know why you hide the moonlight
And starlight behind smog and pallid light
Have you forgotten the wonder of Night's sky?

The brilliance of Milky Way in her shrouded gown
The merging of star path and star light
Inexorably spinning her magnificent wheel
Silently holding court adorned with innumerable gems

I am in turns possessed and lost in her depths
She releases her secrets in spare moments
Only to the tender touch of these adoring eyes
Which spend their nights apart with her
Waiting to witness her smile

Your personification of the Night, particularly the Milky Way, is stunning. The beauty of the night is presented with refreshing nuance here. The language and pace is consistent; creating a predictable charm.

The brilliance of Milky Way in her shrouded gown
The merging of star path and star light
Inexorably spinning her magnificent wheel
Silently holding court adorned with innumerable gems

This stanza couples vivid color with celestial shape for a striking blend. "Innumerable gems" is a cleverly placed metaphor for the many galaxies that constitute the Milky Way, and a personal favorite.

And starlight behind smog and pallid light
Have you forgotten the wonder of Night's sky?

Perhaps in the second line simply "Night" could suffice rather than "Night's sky".

Delightful!
