An Attack

An Attack

A Poem by therisa

Strange how people
Just walk by you
When you are struggling
With your mental health
Upon the subway.

As if
You could catch it
From me
On your journey
To work.

Even though
You can clearly see me
Curling up
Into a fetal position
Right before your eyes.

As another panic attack
Holds me captive
With it’s imprisoning grasp
Upon my body
In the packed subway car.

My heart starts racing
As if it was
A motor revving
On a cold winter’s day
Here.

Sweat droplets fall
From my taunt body
Like the condensation
One sees
On a humid Summer day.

Just want to exit
Unto the safety
Of the station’s platform
Which seems so far
Out of my reach.

Each second
Seems like an eternity
For me
Before I can
Get off.
