Bubba

Bubba

A Poem by Thomas W Case

"
There's an old gray
cat that wanders the
neighborhood.
Neutered and wild
green eyes.
He's confident, and
thick,
doesn't trust humans
but loves tuna.
I don't blame him.
I have three female
cats that watch him through
the window, wagging their
slim tails.
He couldn't care less.

I call him Bubba.
His head is the size of
a grapefruit.
Half of one ear is gone.
I put food out for him.
He waits until I go inside
to eat it.
He's tough.
Lived a rough life.
I can tell, I've been down
some of the same
back roads as him,
slept in similar
alleys.

But no one has
taken my balls

yet.

Thomas,
Sounds like a Bukowski cat, aloof in his pissed-offedness. Living life with not much more than a tongue bath, scraps of somebody else's food, and accepting the occasional bit of catnip as deserved. I don't know what happened to 20th century American poetry that seems to believe if you aren't a hard-core ruffian with an abusive father and alcoholic mother, if you don't live rough, you can't possibly have something to say. Personally, I enjoy the other muse, the one from sex, drugh, and rock-n-roll.

Yet. That's a somber word in the context of this poem. Old ferals think in terms of survival, as well they should. My little house cat Cosette would probably be terrified of Bubba.

Fabulous Thomas - the arcane World of the Feline - they are a lot wiser than humans in some ways. Really Excellent ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Thanks, my friend. Appreciate it.
Reminds me of an old cat we had that got in fights with racoons. Tore up, toughed up. Great images in this poem.
