A Sad Day at the Track

A Sad Day at the Track

A Poem by Thomas W Case

"
On our way into
Santa Anita one day,
an old man had tipped
over in his wheelchair.
There was a pool of blood
beneath his smooth head.
I was with my Dad.
He was around the same
age as the poor injured man.
I was 12.

Seeing that man, and watching
the blank stares of the apathetic
crowd gathering around the
man, and the blood, and the
fallen wheelchair, I knew that
nobody would win, and the
horses that ran were the luckiest
of us all.

How right your last words, The horses were doing what they were born to do, free if not guided by riders.. but the sad fallen guy wasn't meant to be hurt and bloodied, neither were the gawping onlookers who appeared not to help the hurt one. Perhaps they thought they were a 'still' from a movie.. extras with little to do.. idjits! Could make more from your few words, Thomas. Your brevity says more than more.

Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
A sad but interesting comment on human behavior in the wake of a bloody accident; we lose but the horses win! Excellent writing!

Thank you.
I’m surprised someone wasn’t making book whether he’d live or die.
You’re a great talent, my friend.

Some of the most difficult childhood memories and images fuel some of the most powerful creativity be it music, art, dance or writing.

I appreciate it.
Times recalled from childhood often lend themselves well to poetic expression as in this example. I enjoyed the read.
