Raining in January

Raining in January

A Poem by Thomas W Case
"

Life is beautiful, despite nature and technology.

"

Rain smacks the sidewalk
and the rooftop.

Gray as my putter.
Dark as the gutter
I moved away from.

I’m grateful for sobriety.
Grateful for my three cats,
even on nights like this.

Heat-induced chaos.
Rubbing against everything:
My coffee cup.
Notebook.
Water bottle.
The edge of the computer screen.

In my mind, a short putt rolls
like the sun I can’t see.

Cursing under my breath,
metal on green,
life in miniature.

I chuckle to myself.
I pet the cats,
chirping softly

I mutter, “you goofy fuckers,”
to these little fuzzy miracles
obliterated by nature.

It’s nice to smile
in a world full of technology
that would drive a saint mad.

I miss golf.
I loathe tech stuff.

Passwords expire.
Logins fail.
Sites crash mid-post.
Emails vanish.
Drag. Drop. Copy. Paste.
Undo. Redo.

But I’m alive,
hands dry, not shaking,
watching the rain,
and the cats,
and the January thaw.

you're rich. a fine account of recognizing one's blessings. a nice little declaration of independence. golf is relaxing and i'll take the rain over the tech stuff any day. give me the simple life. reminds me of how much enjoyment i get from my afternoon walks with milo.

'The damp rots the soul'. We have had a mild January so far in Bristol UK, though other parts of the country have had it bad. I expect our Payback is yet to come. Really Excellent ✨️✨️✨️✨️

Thank you, my friend.
I can identify with this one in a couple of places. I am a cat owner, and they can be great companions, as long as you keep their litter box clean. Also, technology, for all its conveniences, can drive you up the wall. The last verse, though, is the spiritual lesson here. As long as you can be sincerely grateful, you're walking on the right side of the road.

I completely agree.
Most times the simple things in life are all we really need. :)

ain't that the truth!
Thanks for sharing this honest and heartfelt poem.....

It's like reading a chapter from someone's life.....someone who has suffered and then gone on to experience gratitude....

These are my favourite lines:

But I’m alive,
hands dry, not shaking,
watching the rain,
and the cats,
and the January thaw.

Thank you, my friend.
Oh, my, what a lovely piece! You made me chuckle at your cat profanity, sounding much like me when my one-eyed fuzzy tuxedo falls off the bed when chasing a mouse swinging madly on a string.
I don't play golf because I can't afford it; I used to watch it, though, when Tiger was tearing up the game. What magnificence he possessed, seeming to command the ball to drop, shot by a marksman's finger! Too rich for my blood, and now I'm too frail for even putt putt (which I was pretty good at). A dream I'll have to sleep on now. Thanks for this, it is delightful.

Thomas, I hate the tech stuff, too.
I admire so much how you've turned your life around.
Golf isn't something I'm good at, but I've played putt putt...not well (:
OH! I love to watch it (golf) on TV!
All that walking must keep you in good shape.
Great poem! Love the subtitle.
