Gravity can WaitA Poem by Thomas W CaseMy books are available on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/stores/Thomas-W.-Case/author/B0CL2RKDGX?ref=apThey say waterfalls are beautiful, tourists crowd the railing, damp and wide-eyed, speaking softly about power and surrender like they’ve survived either. I’ve noticed something else. The years piling up behind me like stacks of pennies, leaning. One day they’ll tip. You don’t hear it at first. You’re too busy working, drinking, chasing women, paying bills, trying to keep the lights on. Try not to look too long at the stranger in the mirror. Then one green morning on the eighth hole, your knees ache like they’ve walked centuries. Ailments from doctor visits line up like books on a shelf. They say it’s natural. Everything eventually goes over. I’ve seen men stare too long at the edge, step closer than they meant to. I’m not a fan of gravity. Don’t trust it much anymore. Trust it about as far as I trust a bar that offers the first drink free. Let the river rush. I’m not finished upstream. Still something in the current I want to see before the drop. I jump in once in a while. I can still swim, like an Olympian. There are still lines to write, bass to land, fairways to walk through autumn mist. Still learning, wisdom flies in with age. Like a hummingbird, it hovers and drinks from the sweetness. When I go over that edge it won’t be because I slipped or time shoved me. I’ll do it on my own terms. Until then let it roar. It’ll be there whether I watch or not.
