What Is This?

What Is This?

A Poem by Choosing Life
"

Questions I ask myself way too much

"

What is love?

I would like to know her through your eyes.

Touch her through your soul.

Know her like you seem to.

So that I may brace up against the unknown

With the courage you have.

So that I can hold my shoulders back,

And pick my head up again.

How do you make it look so easy?

You just ignore the facts,

As if they have no place in Love's presence...

But what is love?

I want to feel her through your heart,

And know her through your mind.

I envy the way you don't worry

About what might not happen.

You just stand in the moment...

And like an alchemist,

you make the world take shape,

you change the form

of what is

into what it should be

and I am in awe

of that.

What is love?

That you are so willing to stand,

Not knowing the outcome

And not giving a damn

If things end favorably.

You just face her head on...

As if looking her in the eye

Will intimidate her to your submission.

And you give

With out expectation,

And you love

With out exception,

And I envy that...

What is love?

That I am crippled by fear...

Willing to lose my chances to dance

And willing to sit idly by

As you look at me,

Hoping I can see her through your eyes

touch her through your soul

feel her through your heart

know her through your mind

and realize...

it is okay to let go,

it is ok to give in,

and having control

may mean losing it...

even if only for a minute

and I sit asking what is this?

 Love?

Nice one. It does a great job of sketching out the feeling of how somebody else seems to have a power that we don't possess or at least don't know how to use yet. It's the belief I think, of trying to understand love, and how the other person ('s) seems to have more of a clue then you do. I don't really know if "envy" is even the right word. Maybe it's just some sort of confusion, a wondering about how these other people seem to know "love," how it works, how it is reciprocated, and most of all what it is.

what is love?
a perpetual serendipity non-existant
an illusion invoking a rhetorical question
a constraint forever in lack of space
or - a strength to stare at in the face
a bliss that glows amidst all haze
a clearing to escape from all the daze

it is said that humans were initially of three types: man-man, man-woman and woman-woman. their leaders did something to anger the gods, who in their wrath, sent bolts of lighning down on the earth which split each one into two halves. simultaneously their shadows lost half their lustre. so all their lives humans now go about searching for their other half. what they forget is to look towards their shadow to see if they're complete. (adapted from murakami's "kafka on the shore")

was a long lecture ... wasn't it?
