High tropic Summer lies heavy o’er the land
sweltering heat and humidity
our Amazon, green algae choked
seeking it’s path to the open sea
trying hard not to disappear
into the sodden rain soaked soil
Spanish moss as living room drapes
Queen palms reigning over all
Thunder and lightning,
sturm und drang roll the land
as turkey vultures in a rotting carcass play
in this vast inferno of a summer’s day.
Beyond the banks
ibis and cranes arise, taking flight
with no notice of my presence
or my concerns, their images
reflected in the calm waters
saw grass bending in the soft breeze;
the land feeling nothing
repeating itself with or without me.
