Sharks
A Poem by David Elijah
apriltwentyfourth2018
Let me surf Ocean view Forget the population
I'm a Smurf Turnin' blue From overmedication
I back stroke In the sea Wave hello to all the sharks
'Cause I know They will be So mindful of all my scars
They would pity me if they saw my soul with agony prolific
But my blue skin is blending in with the colors of the Pacific

The poem flows so well because of the precise syllable counting and rhyme scheme which is something I'm very proud of :). There is indeed an underlining meaning. In art, when someone is trying to convey an idea or emotion, I think the art's value to the viewer/listener is decreased when the message is not understood. It's not the viewer's fault, but the artist's. Therefore, the outcome of the artist's explanation can only be to add to the art's value so here's my explanation:
This poem is almost entirely metaphorical. The first stanza means "the swimmer" wants to stop thinking about how alone he is in his despair. In the second stanza, he combats the lonely thoughts by being entertained, occupying his brain, trying to feel something else. When he does this though, his appearance begins to change into one that seems happy (like a Smurf). In the third and fourth stanza, he greets his friends, the sharks, like he always does. A shark is, as defined by Google, "a person who unscrupulously exploits or swindles others". He thinks the sharks won't hurt him because they see his mental scars. By the fifth and sixth stanza, he begins to realize that they wouldn't be so shark-like to him if they knew what he was going through but his true self is being covered up by his entertained self.
The overall message: He deals with his loneliness by keeping to himself and entertaining himself. This, however, causes him to be even more lonely.
