The Literary Bible

The Literary Bible

A Poem by Alyssa Dufresne

The elders say that a belief
is essential to survive,
and that trust in the Almighty
will guarantee my life.

But between the loving volumes
of Dickinson and Poe
and Shakespeare, Alighieri
I comfort my own woe.

I've seen the recommended religion -
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God -
With Genesis and other books
to memorize - I smile and nod.

I know the books of my Bible:
The Divine Comedy - the listed acts of human err
The Collected Poems of Emily - to consult when hurt or scared
Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream -for revenge and love and life
A Tell Tale Heart of insanity to accompany His poor Annabelle Lee

She'll finish off the Old Testament
Now introducing the New:

Between the lines of Robert Frost
I spot answers otherwise lost.
And the adversities of this Brave New World
have, before my eyes, already unfurled.
And when the temperature reaches 451 degrees -
Consult the works of Ray Bradbury.

And while some fly east,
and some fly west,
I fly straight over the cuckoo's nest.

I thoroughly enjoyed the originality of this writing. I love the language of the Jing James version of he bible as much as I enjoy the archaic language of the Elizabethan poets and the down to earth style of Robert Frost. I pity those who proudlt proclaim they have never read abook since leaving school

I love this. You have taken some of the greatest talents in literary history and put them together in one of the best compilations of thought that I have ever seen. This is definitely a fave of mine.
