Revelation

Hope only dies when grief is swallowed by despair, hope consumed by hopelessness, love is replaced by hate, longing replaced by loneliness, empathy replaced by heartlessness, and charity is replaced by miserliness. But even then, hope’s dying embers await rebirth.

(Excerpts from ecclesiastical writings of Arch Rootermage Belladonus BelFaustus)

My wings wilted when I read these saccharine and sanctimonious words coming from the mouths of demons. I mean this both literally and figuratively, not metaphorically. I’m the archangel, Gabriel. Michael, Uriel, Samael, and I are the last remaining heavenly angels who follow God's law. Lucifer’s demonic hordes, aided by the fairy kingdoms and their mother Gaia, defeated us in a surprise attack. If God and our mother, the goddess Asherah, hadn’t been absent, we would have been able to defend ourselves against the assault. But Yahweh and Asherah fled heaven and surrendered themselves from whence they came, never to be heard from again. That was over a millennium ago when the thrones were vacated. Michael, the most powerful of the angels (aside from his twin, Lucifer), became Heaven's regent and was less tolerant and forgiving of humanity's mistakes than his predecessors had been. This attitude led to our downfall. We were captured and sentenced to eternal torment. When hope died, hopelessness became our only comfort. We slowly sink and decay in the ninth circle of Heaven’s Hell, where Lucifer was once chained. The irony burns my feathers.

(Confessions of an angelic heretic)

It was with a conflicted heart that I threw my twin, Michael, and my other siblings into the same mud heap where I was imprisoned. They refused to submit to my authority, unlike all the other angels in heaven. Heaven's forces put up a much weaker fight due to Mother and Father’s absence and silence. They threw down their swords and welcomed me with open arms. Michael couldn’t fill the void Mother and Father had filled; his arrogance and lack of empathy caused dissatisfaction among the Angelics. Although we look exactly alike, our personalities are different. I inherited my mother's traits (loving, compassionate, prideful, and empathetic), while Michael inherited those of my father (pompous, arrogant, unforgiving, and wrathful).  My Mother softened many of my Father’s negative traits or made them tolerable, but Michael had no counterpart to soften his intolerance and wrath.

It was Michael who created the Nine Circles of Hell to punish sinners, apostates, and unbelievers. He called it hell to fool humanity into thinking it was an evil place made of fire and brimstone.  I assure you, the real hell is nothing like that.

I was cast out of heaven for loving Lilith and convincing Mother to grant humanity free will. Father banished Lilith from paradise because she refused to be Adam’s puppet and sex doll. Lilith and I were exiled to one of Earth's netherworld dimensions, which also served as a way station for the dead. Lilith and I ruled over this dominion we named hell. We had hundreds of children, whom heaven named demons. They didn’t have horns, tails, or misshapen bodies like heaven depicts, but were a blend of angelic and human beauty. There is one fact they got right: their eyes are red.

Our firstborn recreated paradise, replacing Earth’s barren surface with her own. She sundered heaven from earth and allied herself with hell. She’s named Gaia, also called Mother Nature. Her first creations were fairies, the first true children of Tellus.

While visiting Fairyland, I sensed an emptiness emanating from heaven. I headed there, alone, a tactical mistake. Michael met me with an army at his back. He said I was a threat to his rule and an apostate. He threw me in the ninth circle of his self-created hell, where he now lies. Karma’s a b***h. I escaped, and heaven felt my wrath. What comes around goes around, and around, until nothingness swallows us whole.
