Let's Dance

A free form poem of someone requesting a dance.

Let’s dance
let our bodies whirl
light as feathers
stiff as boards
weeping willow tresses
flickering in the wind,
cattails swaying on
this bayou dance floor
lights like firefly stars
floating aloft.

Let’s press ourselves
together,
body to body
palm to palm
cheek to cheek
on this crowded floor
as if
it were a
total
complete
accident

Let’s soar across
this freezing marble,
sliding like glittering skaters
but with the freedom of
improvisation and
passion outside a sport

Let’s make this love
set to music
fingers intertwined
knuckles white and knotted
eyes bright like
those of lovers
in the night

Let’s move the couches
slip out of our shoes
soles of our feet
stretch up
praying and pleading
our elbows raise
arms wrap
music glowing in the background
the highlight of
this love

Let us spin there
drunk on joy
freedom
pleasure
and let us smile
smile alabaster white
in the moon’s royal light
let us breath in that
crisp night air
and kiss like it was
destiny.

Let’s dance.
