Grabbing for air

Grabbing for air

A Poem by Alex Davis

 Grabbing for air

You sit alone sad slumped on your chair,

Twiddling thumbs and playing with hair,

I watch from afar, my imprisoned lair,

Oh how I long to be there,

And how I’d love a life to share,

But as a plain as a bucking mare,

You’ve made it clear that you don’t care,

Trapped in vaccum we both stare,

I can’t help but plead, more I can’t bear,

Why the hell can’t I grab air?

So thin the vapor I can see,

To where my heart and soul should be,

I reach out clasping, my last breath gasping,

I fall through smoke, unable to choke,

I hit the ground, lift my hand and look around,

Would only you be there, why the hell can’t I grab air?

I sit in front of mom and pa,

They said ‘good son, you’ll go far’,

I reach and grab for shock and awe,

I try to be glad I’ve lived to par,

I grasp and clench to visions past,

Of dreams of heart that failed to last,

I look on the solid wall in front of me,

As clear as day and plain to see,

So easy it would be to feel,

Though I fear my skin may peel,

Reaching dodging more and more,

The great life futures got in store,

I turn and long for that feint mist,

Never gone but always missed,

And ever present that one fear to bear,

Why the hell can’t I grab air?

So thin the vapor I can see,

To where my heart and soul should be,

I reach out clasping, my last breath gasping,

I fall through smoke, unable to choke,

I hit the ground, lift my hand and look around,

Would only you be there, why the hell can’t I grab air?

Why is it I don’t see what’s not there?

Why the hell can’t I grab air?
