Face of Wax

Have you ever had that sinking feeling, where your stomach sinks down to your feet? You are too young to understand the situation, but old enough to know something’s wrong. When you look upon the face of a loved one, and they don’t look like that loved one anymore, almost like they are made of wax. Well, this can happen when you look at your younger brother’s face. He is not conscious, laying on the floor, covered in vomit, and you don’t even know if he’s alive or not. This is one experience I have had, and wish I hadn’t.

I ran up to my mom after seeing my little brother, Joseph, had fallen out of bed, “MOM!!! JOE’S NOT IN YOUR BED!!!!!!” I looked at my mom as I stifled a laugh, not to let on that I knew what she didn’t. She found him, lying on the floor, and laughed as I had, “Come on Joseph,” she said as she tried to pick him off the floor. “Joseph…” She said calmly, trying to get a better look at him. “JOSEPH!!!!” She screamed as she was frantically trying to bring him to an area were she could get a better look… and more room. I stood there, stunned, like a dear in a headlight. My mother yelled my name, “MARY!!!! CALL THE POLICE!!!!!!” I grabbed the phone and started to dial, “NO!!! CALL GRANDMA!!!!” My mother told me, “What’s grandma’s number?!?!?!” I asked, more frantic then before. “GIVE ME THE PHONE!!!!!!” My mom yelled at me as I walked into the room and i handed her the phone. She dialed ‘911’ and, for the first time, I got a clear look at my brother’s face. I was terrified, that one image of him looking dead. I fled the room in that moment.

The next thing I knew I was outside, yelling for help. “HELP!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!! MY BROTHER HAD A SEIZURE!!!!!!!!!!” In a moment’s notice, I heard angels, sirens blaring, coming towards us. I ran out onto my lawn, screaming, “WE’RE HERE!!!! HELP!!!!” The police officers ran into my house before my mother could ask me to flag them down. I stood in the living room, next to the door. I heard more sirens as an ambulance pulled up. I saw them bring a stretcher in and then I lost control. The tears that had been bubbling up began to spill over as I ran into my room. Then things went by in a flash. I was at my grandma’s house, I stayed up late with my cousin, and missed school the next day.

Whatever happened that night was a fluke, one shot deal. Joseph went right back to normal, as if it had never happened, but there are still signs that he remembers. He has nightmares now, and he is afraid to sleep alone. Over all, one thing stood out in my mind more than anything, the clear shot of his face. Like wax, not human flesh, no life, no soul, nothing. The only relief I have is that he is alive and well now, and now is all that matters.
