Sand

Sand

A Poem by Thomas Walch

She laughs

She cries

She aches

She tries

To forget

What I did

I look at her

Then the sun

They both burn

I do not run

She builds sandcastles

Pretty, protected and fragile

Waves come

Knocking on a sandy door

Further, further every time

Higher, higher

Up the sandy shore

They stop for a minute

Letting us

Enjoy the view

Enough time for her to whisper

“I’ll always love you.”

The castle couldn’t escape

What came next

And neither could I

So I pull her closer

As she begins to cry

I put the walls back up to try again

But I don’t know why

I put the walls back up

Waves will wash them away

Erase the evidence

Of our battle that day

Even after we’re gone

The waves

Keep fighting on

I put the walls back up

One last time

But I know

No number of waves

Under the setting sun

Will ever wash away

The things

I’d done
