Background:

Farrel had a child at a young age. He was in love with the woman he was with, but she took off one day and left their two year old daughter to him. He got a good office job and provided very well for himself and his daughter, Hazel. 

Unfortunately, Farrel was taking in groceries and Hazel had tried chasing after a cat across the street. She was hit by a car and died in her father's arms. 

Farrel falls into a deep depression and just sits around drinking all day until the ghost of Hazel shows herself to him. Thats when he first discovers that he can see ghosts.
