A Chapter by Tina Kline

I ended up having to make a hot breakfast. And I didn't enjoy doing so. I didn't want to be domesticated, or a wife or a mother. Roger wanted me to be those things. I longed for Seattle. I picked at my meals, pretending like I was eating. Roger didn't seem to notice or he didn't want to notice. He liked me bony like a model.

Once breakfast was done I grew more depressed. What was there to do in a cabin during the snowy winter? Roger worked on his lap top. It was part of his job. I didn't have that escape After a while I went to take a nap. I kept hearing the wolf howling. Sometimes coyotes joined it. The snow kept falling.

I dozed. I saw the red lake. The blood poured in from several bloody streams. It hurt. Like a great wound. A pale thin man stood at the edge, looking down. His hair was long and black, He wore black. He dropped to his knees and drank, lapping at the blood like an animal. I felt terror. He stopped, rose to a sitting position and turned his head, He was looking right at me with red reflective eyes like an animal. I gasped.

I sat up in bed and woke. Only a couple hours had passed. Even so it looked dark outside. Heavy snow fell. I felt a strong pull to sneak out and return to the lake. See if it was still blood red. See if the figure was still there.
