8A Chapter by Tina KlineI dressed in layers and left the cabin, taking the path to the lake. My and Roger's tracks of this morning were already buried by the continuing falling snow. I heard the wolf howling, a lovely, lonely mournful sound, and smiled. I felt like I was being welcomed. Tiny bird twittered in the empty bushes, looking for food. A few crows called and a raved responded high in the branches of a Douglas Fir tree. I was getting close to the lake. Would it be red? Would it be blood? Would I see that mysterious figure again? I was pleased Roger wasn't with me. He had his job to work on anyway. The computer made it possible for him to work from his cabin, even so he often drove his 4 wheel drive into town on occasion. The shadows grew longer and deep as I rounded the land bend to the lake. I slowed, softly gasping. Yes, the lake was still red. Bright glittering red. I moved closer. Snow fell silently all around. Was the lake filled with blood or just some weird red water. I'd find out this time. I crossed a short snowy beach and bent down at the lakes edge where blood red water gently lapped at the shore. I removed the glove from my right hand and stuck my hand in the red water. I cried out in shock. It was thick and warm. The icy temperature made smelling the lake impossible for me so I stuck my bloody finger to my nose and took a big sniff. Yes, it had that certain scent blood had. Dare I taste it? “Hello.” a cold voice said behind me. I cried out and stood, turning at the same time. The thought of tasting it forgotten for the moment.
