A Chapter by Tina Kline

A startled cry slipped from my lips. A man stood behind me who wasn't a man. Not a human man anyway. His complexion was white, his eyes glowing like lanterns, a soft red color. He was tall and thin, all dressed in black. But he was human only in shape. His voice didn’t even sound like a human male voice. He was the man I had dreamed about.

“Hello. You going to taste that?” He pointed to the red liquid on my fingers.

I looked at my hand, a weird feeling of confusion making me dizzy and faint. I knew this man creature was the mysterious figure I'd seen at the lake edge earlier and the man in my dream lapping at the red water.

“Well? I know you have a voice. I've heard it.”

“Umm.” I was feeling very confused.

The man creature smiled, “Taste it. Go ahead, It's good.”

For some reason I found myself moving my fingers to my mouth. My lips parted and I slipped my red coated fingers into my mouth and closed my lips around them. Then I pulled my fingers out from my closed lips.

A strange exotic taste exploded on my tongue. It sizzled, like bursts of flavor exploding on my tongue, almost seeming to dance about. I gasped, my eyes widening. I didn’t know what to think of the flavor or the strange reaction of this warm thick crimson liquid on my tongue.

The male creature laughed, “Nice isn't it?” He took a few steps closer to me. “You like it.” He wasn't asking, but making a statement.

I didn’t know what to think. I should be afraid but I wasn't.. I looked the man creature up and down. When he moved I noted he didn't move like a human. There was a strange graceful fluid to his steps, to the way his body moved. It was like gravity didn't effect him the same way it affected humans. Human limitations didn't hinder him, I somehow knew.

“I don't know if its good, Its different.” I finally responded.

The male creature laughed again. It was a sound belonging in some otherworldly place. “You speak!”

“Yes.” I eyed him. I was interested, not annoyed.

“You need to drink more. You'll get use to it and like it.”

I looked at the lake. Did I want to drink more?
“Go ahead.” the male creature urged me. “I”ll join you. We can drink it together.

What a strange situation and man/creature. She must be under some dark spell to want to even drink that red/blood water. Very intriguing.

Coyote Song, thanks for all the reviews!!
The dark mystery deepens and starts to unfold.
A cold, bloody world here indeed.

Run! Run! Don't drink the waters of the red lake, or should I say liquid of the red lake.

What a strange and dark encounter. What is the male creature. I like how you made him so mysterious and different. And the blood lake...now there is a mystery. Good story.
