I didn’t see you singing,
nor hear your voice rise with the choir
in the school concert lights.

I didn’t see you on the football field,
running with laughter and pride,
wearing your school colors high.

I didn’t see you riding your bike to school,
the morning breeze playing in your hair.

I didn’t even get to say,
“Have a nice day at school,”
as the sun opened its golden eyes.

I wasn’t there
for the parents and teachers meetings,
to sit quietly and listen
to stories about you.

And maybe one day
you won’t let me see your wedding,
because you never told your friends
that I am your mother.
