Lit cigarette

Lit cigarette

A Story by Linda alexander

I was walking through the neighborhood with the lit cigarette on my lips and my daughter-in-law was with me plus our dog Charlie too. Charlie is four year old chuvava. I am seventy nine years two months and 11 days old retiree enjoying retired life. I worked about six decades in the same place as a nurse with a degree those days and a bedside in nursing with the four year degree was a big thing and working for six decades at bedside was physically and mentally challenging too. I pursued my masters degree along the road I mean along big long and adventurous road of family life and raising three children and paying the bills at same time. Life was both sweet and bitter at its own seasons. when looking back no regrets only gratitude. I used to smoke during my lunch break, but later on based on the green living policy, the premises of the instituition became smoke free zone and it saved me by not having lung cancer by this age smoking last fourty years.
I have three kids, two of them married one still figuring out which path she has to go in life. Six grandchildren or under the age of 20. I fly to Dubai, Paris, Peru, Mexico, and Bali just for fun with my teenage grandchildren. I felt so young when I travelled with them. My Daughter always says blind leading the blind God knows where they go, how long they go and when do they come back safely.

I go to the park with my younger grandchildren and sneak through the back door. If we are really late and literally pray their parents won’t yell at us as they are concerned for the safety. Oh well I know that for sure, but I am a grandma with the privileges of taking risk even if it’s not necessary.
Why Charlie barking like this? He might have seen a squirrel and he thinks all this area is his territory. He is with me all the time and my presence might have gave him that perception.
Hey Ma, this is your third cigarette and we walked only for 30 minutes. My daughter-in-law reminded me. She calls me ma and I like it too. oh well I thought life is so short as I smoked all these years. Great God gave me plethora of blessings in my life and what she knows about the life I lead last seventy nine years two months and eleven days so please chill Christina I reminded her but she is not thinking it as a cool conversation. Please don’t go for the fourth cigarette Christina reminded me again almost sleight tinge of warning as if invisible cancer laced in each cigarette. I can’t write without cigarettes and I can not walk without cigarettes. We already back home so I’ll meet you another time with another lit cigarette.
