From the scratch chapter 18/18A Story by Linda alexander
It is late already Chris can you take the bridge to get home faster. Christina you know well I hate to take that route to home and you know the exact reason. Please Chris we will take the bridge as I have to hit the bed asap.
We both mutually agreed and took the bridge and there standing a lady by the bridge depressed and her eyes looked like as those of a dead fish with no emotions at all. I am going to stop the car. No Chris you are not stopping the car three in the morning and in the middle of a bridge. Christina, I stopped at the same place three decades ago and that is the reason you are alive now. Christina yelled so loud at Chris that he should not intervene with that lady. Chris ignored her. The minute my feet touching the brake pad Christina sobbed and told me Jenna our future daughter in law is pregnant and technically I am a grandfather. The word grandfather shook me so hard that I hit the accelerator so hard and the car reached home taking less than half the the time it usually takes. We reached home I took the Bible and read Psalm chapter ninety one and Psalms chapter one hundred and fifty. Some how I felt that God protected us from some danger. Next day we both read in the newspaper bunch of robbers robbed and murdered the couple who stopped their car at the same bridge we took last night around three in the morning . I told to Christina that it was a very good thing that lady at the bridge did not yell at top of her lungs love you grandpa just like you did. I would have in a confused state and might have stopped the car and Curtis would have lost his parents and his child might have lost grandparents. Don’t tell what happened last night to Curtis and Jenna I warned Christina. She hugged and simply started crying and I tried to console her but I couldn’t. Christina suggested to order some pizza and I did it. You are not asking for joints or beer Christina. She said to me wine alone will do for today. We enjoyed our pizza with wine and did not talk that much but both were calmer than usual and just smiled at each other and took a deep breath of relief. The relief seemed like it touched corners of many memories both good and bad past last three decades starting from the bridge which said life is precious and safeguard it. © 2025 Linda alexander |
