Five Strangers and One Very Bad IdeaA Chapter by AlexandreaFor a solid ten seconds... nobody spoke. The fire around Kael slowly dimmed, though it didn't disappear completely. It lingered around his arm like it was waiting for instructions. The girl with the water powers stared at him, then at the flames. "...So," she said carefully, "you're on fire." Kael looked down at his arm. "I noticed." "And you're not screaming." "I feel like that's a good sign." The boy with the lightning snorted. "Or a really bad one." Kael shot him a look. "Wow. Thanks. That helps." The girl stepped closer, the water around her hands slowly settling into a floating sphere. Her expression shifted from shock to focus"like she was trying to understand instead of panic. "My name's Lira," she said. "And whatever this is... it's happening to me too." She lifted her hand slightly. The water responded instantly, swirling and shaping itself like it was alive. Kael blinked. "Okay, yeah. That's... not normal." "Wow," the lightning guy added. "You think?" Before Kael could respond, a sudden gust of wind rushed through the clearing. Leaves lifted into the air. Branches creaked. And then" Vines shot up from the ground. All three of them jumped back. "What was THAT?!" Kael yelled. From behind a tree, a girl stepped out slowly. Vines curled gently around her arms before retreating back into the soil like obedient pets. She looked just as confused as the rest of them. "I... didn't mean to do that," she said quietly. Kael ran a hand through his hair. "Great. So now plants are attacking us too." "They weren't attacking," she said, almost offended. "They were reacting." "Same difference." Before anyone could argue further" A cold chill swept across the clearing. Not wind. Not weather. Something else. The shadows near the trees stretched unnaturally, twisting like they were alive. And then someone stepped out of them. A boy. Dark clothes. Calm expression. Eyes that didn't show even a hint of surprise. Unlike the rest of them... he didn't look confused. He looked like he already understood. "Five," he said simply. Kael frowned. "Five what?" The boy's gaze moved between them. "Five of us," he said. "Just like it said." Lira stiffened. "Said where?" The boy didn't answer right away. Instead, he lifted his hand. The shadows beneath his feet rose"like smoke, like liquid darkness"and wrapped around his arm before fading again. Kael took a step back. "Yeah... okay, I officially don't like that." Lightning guy grinned slightly. "Nah, that one's actually kind of cool." "Of course you would think that." The quiet girl with the vines stepped closer to the group, still cautious. "Something is happening to all of us," she said. "At the same time. That can't be a coincidence." "No," Lira agreed. "It isn't." Kael crossed his arms. "Alright, let's think about this logically"" A sudden burst of fire shot from his hand and slammed into a nearby tree. BOOM. The tree went up in flames instantly. Everyone froze. Kael stared at his hand. "...I take it back," he said. "Let's not think logically." The lightning guy burst out laughing. "Oh, this is going to be fun." "Fun?!" Kael snapped. "I just almost burned the forest down!" "Almost," he said. "Details." Lira stepped in quickly. "Okay, no more random power usage. Clearly none of us know how to control this yet." "Speak for yourself," the shadow boy said quietly. All eyes turned to him. Kael narrowed his eyes. "You know something." The boy met his gaze. "Yes." Silence. Kael gestured impatiently. "Well? You want to share with the class or just stand there being mysterious?" The lightning guy snorted again. "Yeah, man, you're doing the whole 'dark and secretive' thing a little too well." The boy ignored him. "This wasn't random," he said. "The lights in the sky. The power. Us." Lira's expression hardened. "Then what is it?" The boy hesitated. Just for a second. Then" "Something that shouldn't have happened yet." Before anyone could respond, the ground trembled again. Harder this time. A distant roar echoed through the forest. Not human. Not animal. Something else. Something big. Kael's stomach dropped. "Please tell me that's not coming toward us." Another roar. Closer. The trees in the distance shook violently. Lightning guy's grin faded. "Yeah... that's definitely coming toward us." Lira looked around quickly. "We need to move. Now." "Move where?!" Kael asked. The shadow boy turned toward the darkness beyond the clearing. "Anywhere but here." The vines girl nodded. "He's right." Kael looked at all of them"strangers, powered, confused, and somehow connected. This night had gone from weird... to impossible... to dangerous in about five minutes. He took a deep breath. "Okay," he said. "New plan." Another roar shook the ground. "Run." They didn't argue. They ran. Behind them, something crashed into the clearing. Something massive. Something watching. And for the first time that night... The power inside Kael didn't feel like a gift. It felt like a warning. © 2026 Alexandrea |
