The Coffee Shop

The Coffee Shop

A Chapter by Stephie.Santi

Evan worked at a small cafe near the river. The smell of expresso and cinnamon hung in the air. He was wiping down tables when Sophie arrived, brushing rain from her coat.
"Hey" he said softly, eyes scanning her face.
Sophie smiled, but it felt tight. "Hey"
They sat by the window. Outside, cars splashed through puddles. Inside, a playlist of soft indie music hummed under the sounds of clicking mugs.
   "Work was... Stressful" he said.
Sophie felt herself tense. He's pulling away. He's leaving.
"Want to talk about it? " She asked, forcing her voice steady.
"I just need a little space tonight" he said.
   Space.

   Sophie nodded. "of course".
But on the walk home, her chest burned with panic. Space felt like rejection. every step towards her apartment made her stomach knot tighter, a reminder that she had no control over people leaving.
