The Night It Breaks OpenA Chapter by Stephie.Santi
By evening, Sophie had tried everything to calm herself. She made a pot of tea, sat by the window, stared at the rain sliding down the glass. She tried to read, but the words blurred. She tried to breath, but the air felt heavy, stuck in her lungs.
Love hit first- thinking about Evan, worrying she'd lost him. Then anger replaying every misunderstanding from the day, every small misstep. Then sadness- remembering her father, remembering how little control she'd ever had. Finally came the numbness- the creeping emptiness that made her feel unreal. She stood at the sink, gripping the edge, her palms sweaty. The mirror shimmered slightly, as though it had been waiting for this. Her reflection looked back at her, trembling, scared, familiar. She leaned closer, breathing in shallow, fast burst. The bathroom walls seem to stretch. Her reflections bent and flickered. And then, slowly, impossibly, the mirror became a doorway.
