BetrayalA Chapter by Katheryn10Anna "I don't think Sophie is going to like me after this" I commented to Joel as we set up weapons. He loaded a sports bag with stakes. "Well maybe you shouldn't have told her everything." Joel was still pretty pissed off that we were going to rescue our dad without so much as a back up plan. All my 'ideas' ended up sounding dumb, so we decided to just hope for the best. We had two new fairly strong vampires, Isabella and a whole bundle of weapons me and dad used to for training. So altogether we had maybe, 5% chance of success. That was Joels perspective anyway. I on the other hand thought we would do pretty well considering my fighting skill and his new born ability to get pissed off easily. Sophie accepted that she couldn't go all too easily. She didn't put up much more of a fight and kept quiet since I told her three and half hours ago. "Well I didn't want to tell her. But you know how she is. I wouldn't have been able to put up with her pouting and sulking all day otherwise." I pointed to one of my old training swords. "You wanna take this?" "Ha Ha very funny sis." We both found some old toolbelts that fit well and stuck several stakes in the slots. We were in my bedroom and when I heard noises downstairs of someone banging, my head shot up. "What was that?" I whispered. Joel looked at me like I was hearing things. "You hear that noise?" He listened carefully and then nodded, grimacing. I left my bag and went to the door, "Keep packing, I'm just going to check it out." We nodded to each other and I went downstairs. When I got to the first level of the spiral stairs, I could see down the gap what was going on. There was a young man dressed all in black, including mask. He was pointing a gun at my mums head and shouting "Where's the other vampire?" I froze. Did he mean me or Joel? I creeped back up to my room and found Joel paused from packing. "Did you hear?" I asked once I was with him. I tried to speak quietly. He nodded. "We gotta help mum, she's helpless. I don't know if they mean me or you but either way, they can't know about you yet. You gotta act human." He didn't like that idea. "Do you think you can hide that mark on your neck?" I pointed out. He looked embarrassed, "Is it that obvious?" His hand flew to the right side of his neck. "Well, to me, not so much. But for any vampire looking for a made vampire, yes." I thought of something, "Wait, I know. I hope you don't mind make-up." I went to my makeup draw and brought out a small pot of skin coloured foundation. Joel moaned, "Oh come on, it's only for a moment while we go trap this guy downstairs." I dabbed a bit of foundation on his neck and once I was happy we quietly went downstairs. We hoped the man/vampire/whoever was now in another room so we could jump on him. Although even I know vampires have extremely sensitive senses so no amount of jumping would surprise them. "Shh, let me do the talking. When we're in the kitchen, I want you to come up behind with a stake." When he make a yuck sound, I added, "No it won't kill straight away. It'll just stun him. Oh and if it looks like I'm in trouble, go get Richard." After he nodded, I creeped down the rest of the stairs and marched along towards where mum was. "Mum what's going on?" I called not-too-quietly on my way to the living room. They both turned to me about twenty feet away and I could see mum shaking her head while he wasn't looking. "Who are you?" The man with the gun pointed at my mums head turned to look at me with eyes as dark as the night. He wore a balaclava over his face. I smiled and put my arm out so he could shake it. "I'm Anna. And you are?" I hoped he couldn't tell I was a vampire. If he could, then I'm screwed. He smiled briefly back and shook my hand. His gunfree hand, that is. "I'm Travis. I'm looking for the other vampire in this household." he sneered at me when I laughed. "Other vampire. Ohh that would be my brother Steven. He's moved away, I'm afraid. Off with his girlfriend. I'll be sure to pass on a message for you though." I never let my smile leave my face. He looked at me suspiciously but I didn't break. "Well, we have news that the other vampire is in this house, but I gotta wait for my partner to come here anyway. But if I find you're lying little girl, you're dead." His lips coiled back to show heavy gold plated teeth and I flinched slightly. He seemed satified that he'd managed to frighten me. "Well how about we settle down and you back away from my mother, since she's innocent." I edged over to a seat furthest from the open door so that he would have no choice but to sit on the chair nearest the door. That way Joel could come up from his behind. Travis stared at me for a long second before dropping his gun. Personally I didn't think he needed a gun if he had true vampire strength. Unless he hadn't been taking his vitamins. "So Travis, I believe you hold my father?" I asked casually. He didn't seem too interested in replying at first but then I saw a brief look of achievement in his eyes and he took a breath. "Yeah, we do. It wasn't hard, really. If he hadn't married such a whimp human then maybe I would have had a fight." He grinned in my mums direction, "But since he was so eager for us not to hurt her, he let us take him easily." I nodded like it was no big deal, when inside my heart (did i still have one?) was hurting. "So you said you're waiting for your partner. Who are they?" I crossed my legs in a sign of relaxing. I wasn't going to let him get the better of me. "Oh, she is Isabella. We live in the mansion near by. I'm sure your father has told you all about us." He laughed heartily as if he was talking of tall tales. I blinked. Realising he'd startled me I tried to keep calm. "Isabella? Well, we hadn't heard about you or the mansion." I frowned slightly, and looked behind him onimously to see Joel standing there staring at me dumbfounded. He had a stake hidden in his hand behind his back. I knew only because I could hear him thinking of how to attack. I nodded ever so slightly, and in that second, Joel swiped the stake, catching Travis by surprise a second in advance, in the back. Travis froze and with the force of the stake, bent over in pain and ended up writhing on the floor. There was blood oozing out of his leather jacket and I shook my head when Joels hand moved towards the stake. We grabbed Travis, hoping he was in too much of shock to do anything to us, and sat him down front ways on the chair he fell from. Getting some old brown tape from the kitchen, Joel taped Travis's mouth and tied his arms and legs to the chair. We knew it wouldn't hold him in the long run. But so long as no one took out the stake, he would stay semi-paralysed for now. "I, I really didn't know.." Joel mumbled pitifully to me. I didn't have to hear is thoughts to realise he didn't know Isabella was one of them. I patted Joel on the back in a tough gesture. "Shh Joel, it's okay. I believe you." He sniffled and straightened himself, giving Travis a look even I would be scared of. "Travis? Did you get them?" A young female voice sounded from the entrance hall. I looked around for a weapon and found a cricket bat near the fireplace. "No, no. let me talk to her, please?" Joel put his hands out to stop me. I cursed. "Okay, if you must." He set off around the corner to see Isabella peeking into the study room across the hall. "Isabella." Joel didn't bother to question why she was here. "You lied to me." He sounded almost upset. She turned around. Stuck in place, looking at him like he was a small baby up for sale. "Joel... I had no idea you lived here. I would have -" "Oh cut the crap Isabella. Your face shone like diamonds when I told you I had a sister who was a born vampire." He spat the words out like poison. Isabella moved forward, filling the space between him and her in a matter of seconds. "I honestly... Well okay I did know. But that was.. Well... I can't explain." She reached out to touch his face, but he smacked her hand away. "Don't... touch me." I walked around the corner properly, hiding the bat behind me incase things got ugly. "You must be..." Isabella looked at Joel for help. "Anna. Nice to meet you, Isabella." I put out my hand and she shook it politely. "I see. Where's, um, Travis?" She peered around the hallway as if he'd appear at any moment. I grinned at Joel, "He's safe. For now. I must warn you, Isabella, we will attack you if you even think of untying him." I saw her look at the front door. "Or escaping." I added. She looked in the room and found Travis tied to the chair with the stake in his back. She gasped in horror. Hurrying to his side and checking for consiousness, Joel dragged her back by the hair. "You don't touch him." Joel snarled. Joel pushed her into the chair next to Travis.
